How to Screen Record on Macbook Air

Screen recording has become the need of various users like teachers, students, remote employees, etc. It’s an advantageous feature that allows you to make a copy of video chats or record weekly/monthly performance reports for your clients. Let’s see how to screen record on Mac/Macbook Air.

1- Use the keyboard:

The keyboard shortcut method would open the in-built screenshot and screen recording application. After you press the (Cmd + Shift + 5) buttons together, you’ll get access to various tools. You may have options to record the full screen or a certain part. The same goes for the screenshot; you could snap a single tab, capture a portion of a screen or cover the entire window.

If you want to customise more settings, you may click on “Options”, which will allow you to set up a timer, choose the location to save the file, and record the audio if needed. Other options include the choice of having a floating thumbnail or keeping the same settings you had saved previously. Moreover, to cease the recording, you may find the stop button in the toolbar, or you could press Cmd + Control + Esc to finish the recording process quickly.

More shortcuts:

  • Press Shift + Cmd + 3 to take a full screenshot.
  • Press Shift + Cmd + 4 to snap a certain area of a screen.
  • Press Shift + Cmd + 4 + Spacebar to capture a tab.

2- Utilise the QuickTime Player app:

The QuickTime player is another built-in application in the MacBook Air that users mostly prefer for taking screenshots and screen recording. This app is also capable of recording audio along with the screen.

You’ll have to open the app via Finder. Once it launches, click on “File” to access the menu and select the “New Screen Recording” option. If you own a newer MacBook Air model or iMac, the toolbar we described in the 1st method will open up, and following the instructions mentioned above will help.

Older versions like macOS High Sierra or previous will open a screen recording window. You may click on the arrow next to the “record button” to customise settings like allowing the microphone to be recorded or displaying your mouse clicks.

To start the recording process, you may click wherever you like on the screen to record the entire window. However, to record a particular part, you may drag the cursor to select the chosen area and click on the “red button” to start the recording.

After you’re done, stop the recording by clicking the square-shaped icon within a circle available at the top of your screen. The recording will play automatically. You can choose to edit, share and save the video. To save the video, you may click on the “File” tab and pick “Save.”

3- Use Third-party recorders:

You could use third-party screen recorders that may offer a lot more features than the screenshot utility and the QuickTime Player. Screen recorders like Camtasia, CloudApp, DemoCreator, etc., offer advanced editing tools. So, for professional YouTubers and tutorial creators, third-party apps might be more beneficial and fruitful.

Final thoughts:

Screen recording on Mac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro is pretty straightforward. Following the guide, you can easily record video and audio and share it with whomever you want.
