At around 10 am on a weekday morning, a customer from Camden, near Kentish Town around Marylebone.  called Geeks Callout to report a serious issue with his gaming desktop. The PC was shutting down within 5 minutes of usage, making gaming or even normal browsing impossible. He had already cleaned the machine himself, but saw no improvement.

He also mentioned his son was facing low FPS, lag and freezing issues for several weeks before the sudden shutdown problem began.

After a quick discussion, the customer agreed to use our free pickup service. Within the hour, our engineer collected the PC from Camden and brought it into our lab for full diagnosis.

Initial Lab Inspection

The moment the system arrived, it was clear the PC was not in a healthy condition:

  1. Fans were making a grinding noise
  2. The internal airflow was blocked
  3. The NZXT Kraken liquid cooler was heating up instantly
  4. The radiator had one jammed fan
  5. Overall temperatures were extremely unstable

This told us the shutdown issue was almost certainly thermal-related.

Hardware Specification (Customer’s Build)

  1. CPU: AMD Ryzen 9000 Series
  2. GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3070
  3. Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 UD AX
  4. Storage: Western Digital 1TB NVMe (non-gaming model)
  5. PSU: Corsair RM750e Fully Modular 750W
  6. Cooler: NZXT Kraken (previous gen)

Step 1: PC Cooling System Diagnosis & Fix

Within minutes of stress testing the system, we identified the critical fault:

NZXT Kraken 240mm Cooler – Faulty Pump / Hot Tubes

The cooling tubes were extremely hot, the pump showed irregular flow, and a radiator fan was completely jammed.

Resolution:
We immediately removed the NZXT unit and installed a conventional air-cooling heatsink temporarily to stabilise the machine.

Result: The PC stayed on without shutting down.

This confirmed the cooler was the main cause of the 5-minute shutdowns.

Step 2: Full System Testing (OCCT + FurMark)

Once stable, we ran a complete assessment:

A: CPU Test (OCCT)

  1. Passed
  2. No throttling once the temporary cooler was applied

B: GPU Test

Under FurMark & OCCT GPU burn:

  1. Temps hit 83–84°C on the RTX 3070
  2. The card was physically radiating heat excessively
  3. This temperature is not acceptable for modern AAA gaming, such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, or Cyberpunk

C: NVMe Test

The Western Digital 1TB drive reported:

  1. SSD Weak health
  2. Slow read/write consistency
  3. Not suitable for gaming workloads

We don’t recommend running modern titles on NVMe drives below 100% health, as they affect load times and system responsiveness.

Step 3: Consultation with the Customer

We called the client to explain all findings.

This PC was primarily used by his teenage son for gaming, so stability and performance were important.

The customer wanted the system fully sorted and approved our recommended upgrades:

  2. GPU Max Temp: 67°C
  3. NVMe Health: 100% stable
  4. No shutdowns, no throttle, no stutter

We tested the system for over 6 hours, including gaming-level stress.

Final Outcome

  2. Healthy NVMe storage
  3. A GPU capable of handling modern titles
  4. Routine servicing to prevent dust build-up and thermal failure

Thanks to a careful diagnostic process and high-quality replacement parts, we were able to deliver a like-new gaming system with safer temperatures and significantly improved performance.
