If you’re looking for a laptop featuring an alternative operating system to Windows and Mac, then Linux models are your best choice. Once a preferred choice of technical professionals, the Linux series of operating systems has now become popular with users in general, however, most manufacturers don’t offer models where it’s pre-installed. That’s why we’ve tracked five of the best Linux models available.

1. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (8th Gen)

Lenovo’s X1 Carbon has been certified for pre-installation by Ubuntu, it’s a dynamic machine that’s compatible with more innovative distros such as Fedora.

It’s also a great laptop for professionals, with 8GB RAM, and a 14’’ display. It features a light and durable design, weighing only two pounds but with MIL-STD 810G durability, making an accidental drop somewhat less troublesome. Lenovo offers several screen options for this model including 1080p touchscreens with privacy filters and a 4k display.

There are several ports for Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.2 Type-A, and HDMI video output. This model also features some useful security features, namely a fingerprint and facial recognition with Windows Hello.

However, it features a base Intel UHD GPU, meaning it’s uncompetitive in relation to gaming laptops, although more expensive builds feature an i7 processor over the base i5.

2. Dell XPS 13 7390

This is a flagship Dell Ultrabook that’s also certified by Ubuntu for pre-installation. The XPS can be purchased with several configurations, including the base 8GB of RAM which can be upgraded to 16GB, and two SSD options with 256GB or 512 GB of storage. There’s also two touchscreen choices including a more expensive 4k option.

This is another choice for the office as the XPS also has an Intel UHD graphics card and won’t accommodate high-end gaming. There’s only one colour scheme option for the Ubuntu model which might be an issue if you prefer alternative designs.

3. System76 Serval WS

A hefty but efficient machine, the Serval WS stands as a more high-end Linux choice, featuring a 9th Gen Intel Core, not to mention various specification options up to 64 GB RAM, plus a 12TB drive.

The WS is distinctive due to its gaming viability, with several NVidia RTX GPUs available, plus an HD or 4k display on a 15’’-17’’ screen.
It also takes on the look of a typical gaming machine, with multi-colored backlighting, and there’s a choice of System 76’ s custom POP!_OS, which is based on Ubuntu, or Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. The price may be discouraging, however.

4. Juno Neptune 15-inch

Another fantastic gaming option with a dedicated RTX 2060 GPU, an i7 processor, plus 144Hz visuals. Juno are Linux virtuosos and they’ve definitely provided a solid gaming machine for Ubuntu.

The Neptune boasts a series of customization possibilities, including upgrades to an Nvidia RTX 2070 or 2080 Max-Q GPUs, and features a slim build which is rather unique as gaming machines go. This model also sports good internet connectivity with Wi-Fi 6.

5. Dell Inspiron 15 3000

The 15 3000 is a good budget option and functions well alongside a free Linux OS. This model features a base Intel Pentium Gold 5405U and only 4GB RAM, however Ubuntu and other less demanding Linux distros will complement the low-end specs rather nicely as opposed to Windows or macOS.

Surprisingly, the laptop features 1080p which is uncommon for cheaper machines, in addition to full-size USB and HDMI ports, plus an SD card reader. The Inspiron might not be as powerful as other machines, but it’s certainly functional.
