Even though the action of right clicking on a laptop is a simple one, still some people find it difficult. One of the reasons could be the design of the trackpad which comes without buttons in most of the latest notebook models.
Previous designs used to include two buttons showing separation between the right and the left side which would provide the user an assurance of clicking correctly on the trackpad. This was helpful because in case of laptop freezing or unresponsiveness of trackpad, the user could detect the problem easily. However, now a user may worry if they right-click properly or not due to the incompleteness of action.
An external mouse gives the same benefit as it too comes with the division between the right and the left side, making clicking convenient because you know exactly where to click. But, if you don’t use it, you can either think about investing in one or learn how to right-click from your touchpad/trackpad, touchscreen or keyboard. Depending on what makes you more comfortable and helps in enhancing your efficiency, you can go with that option.
In our guide, we’ll explain how you can right-click using the touchpad/trackpad, touchscreen and keyboard. Let’s get into more detail.
How to right click on a Windows 11 laptop?
We explain how you can perform the action of right clicking on a Windows 11 laptop below. You can also use the same steps for Windows 10.
1- Right click using the Touchpad:
There are 2 simple ways which you can use to right-click using the touchpad of your laptop.
You may press with your finger on the lower right side of the trackpad, if there are no buttons. In case there are buttons, you can press the one on the right side. The menu will open up once you do that; however, if you click and nothing happens, you may wait a little to see if a menu pops up or not before clicking again. That would help you to figure if the laptop’s getting stuck or you didn’t press firmly enough.
The two-fingers tap settings allow you to simply tap anywhere on your trackpad to get a right-click menu. You only have to use two fingers and tap once and you’ll get the right-click function working smoothly. To do so, you may type, “Touchpad Settings” in the search bar of your Windows and open it. Once it’s opened, tick mark the box that allows you to use your index and middle finger together for getting the right-click menu without a problem.
2- Use the keyboard:
The keyboard comes in handy when your touchpad fails to respond to commands or your external mouse doesn’t work either. You may easily activate “Mouse keys” in the settings and use the numeric keys on the keyboard to control the cursor. You can type “Mouse keys” in the search bar and open it. Toggle the button available against “Mouse Keys” to turn them on.
Once you do so, you can freely use the numeric keys to manipulate the cursor. Pressing the minus key “-” would allow you to right-click on your notebook. However, to learn the complete use of mouse keys, visit the official guide by Microsoft.
You can control how to use the trackpad as per your preference in the Trackpad settings on your MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Usually, you’d press the control key + tap anywhere on the trackpad; however, you can also click or tap two fingers or activate the clicking on the bottom right corner of the trackpad to right click.
To do this, go to System Preferences > Trackpad and check the box for “Secondary click.” This will allow you to right-click by selecting the option of “Click in bottom right corner” or “Click or tap with two fingers” on the trackpad.
Sadly, there aren’t any dedicated mouse keys which you can use in MacBook Air or MacBook Pro like you could with systems running on macOS Catalina which is no longer supported by Apple anymore.
By following our guide, you can easily right click on your laptop and enhance your productivity. However, if you encounter any issues, contact Geeks Callout London right away and we’ll ensure to help you resolve any complication instantly.
