What to do if your HP Laptop is Stuck on HP Screen

HP laptops perform excellently. Users, especially in the work environments prefer using HP ProBook or Chromebook models. However, if the laptop gets stuck on HP screen/logo, it can give users a serious panic attack. 1- Disconnect external bootable devices:

You may detach any bootable device like Flash drives, USBs, CD/DVDs and restart the laptop. Because there’s a boot sequence that a computer follows, and if an error occurs in the sequence, it could try to boot an external device attached to the laptop before the operating system, which could lead to the screen freeze problem at startup.

So, once you remove all the bootable devices and unnecessary peripherals, shut down the laptop by pressing the power button. Turn it back on after 5 seconds; the laptop might recognise the hard drive and boot successfully without the screen getting stuck.

2- Go for a hard reset:

A hard reset would refresh the system’s memory. It won’t risk data loss and help the computer to start successfully.

For notebook models with a removable battery

  1. Shut down the laptop and detach the charger pin from the jack.
  2. Disconnect any external devices attached.
  3. Take the battery out of the battery compartment by pushing the latches.
  4. Press the power button for 22 seconds.
  5. Put the battery back into its place and connect the charger.
  6. Turn on the laptop and see if the issue has gone away.

For notebook models with non-removable battery

You have to follow the same steps except for removing the battery since it’s non-removable anyway. So, just turn the laptop off and follow the rest of the steps. Moreover, remember to remove the memory cards and CDs/DVDs connected to the device as well while you disconnect other gadgets like a printer, keyboard, gaming console, etc.

3- Reset the GPU driver:

Resetting the GPU driver may help resolve the issue because errors with the graphics card driver can often cause the screen to go blank/black or freeze up.

To reset the GPU system, you may press the Start key + Ctrl + Shift + B at the startup screen. This might help the laptop reset the GPU driver and unfreeze the screen, leading to a normal boot.

4- Refresh the BIOS system:

BIOS is responsible for building a connection between the hardware and the operating system that allows the laptop to start and function normally. So, if an error occurs in the BIOS, the screen could get stuck during the boot process.

  1. Shutdown the laptop and make sure the charger is connected.
  2. Push down the Start key + B key + power button together.
  3. Release the power button after 5 seconds; however, keep pressing the Start + B key.
  4. You’ll hear a beep sound, and the BIOS update window will display, starting the reset automatically.

 5- Run HP diagnostics:

You can run tests using the HP diagnostics tool to fix the problem.

  1. Hold down the power button to turn off the laptop.
  2. After 5 seconds, turn it back on and press the “Esc” key again and again until the menu appears.
  3. Use the F2 key to choose the “System Diagnostics.”
  4. Select “System Tests” and choose “Fast Test.”
  5. Click on “Run once.”

You’ll be able to see the test results for each component on the screen. In case of a failed result for a certain part, you’ll get a code that you may note down and use for contacting the HP support later. If all the results come out nicely, continue the tests.
