At Geeks Callout, we receive hundreds of repair requests from across London every month, but some devices demand extra skill, patience, and experience. One such case arrived from N1 Islington, near Angel, Hoxton, and King’s Cross, a customer with a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (Model 1979) dropped the surface and got the ribbon damage.
The customer contacted us early in the morning, explaining that the laptop display had gone completely black after a light impact. They needed urgent help to recover the device for work. We dispatched our driver to collect the laptop the same day.
The Device We Received
Device: Microsoft Surface Laptop 4
Model Number: 1979
Screen Size: 15-inch PixelSense Touchscreen
Resolution: 2496 × 1664
Processor: Intel Core i7 (11th or 12th Gen, depending on configuration)
Ports:
The Microsoft Surface range is known for its slim design, glued-down display, and delicate internal components. This makes Surface repairs tricky and unsuitable for inexperienced technicians.
The Issue: Ribbon Cable Damage & Broken Impact Track
Upon inspection, our engineer found:
The customer had attempted to inspect the device themselves, causing the adhesive to weaken and the corners of the screen to lift.
Surface devices use four display ribbons running from the motherboard to the screen. All four were partially exposed.
This was the main reason for the black display.
This created pressure on the internal connectors, worsening the damage.
Due to ribbon damage, both the LCD and touch layers were affected.
Due to its ultra-thin design, Surface Laptop repairs require controlled heat, specialised tools, and extreme care. Breaking the glass or damaging the digitiser is common if handled incorrectly.
How Our Microsoft Geeks Repaired It
We carefully removed the screen using controlled heat and plastic separation tools. The aim is to lift the glass without cracking it further.
The damaged ribbon cable was replaced with a compatible Microsoft-certified part. All four ribbons were tested for continuity and alignment.
The broken impact track was strengthened internally to ensure the screen sits flush and pressure-free.
We reapplied industrial-grade adhesive to reseal the screen safely and securely.
Everything passed successfully.
Customer Outcome
The customer was thrilled to have the laptop back the same day, fully working, with the screen and touch functions restored to factory quality.
They mentioned they had been quoted unrealistic prices around £389 elsewhere and told the device was “non-repairable”. At Geeks Callout London, we always investigate every case properly before making that judgment.
