Windows 10 License and Upgrade

Microsoft Windows users only had to experience an upgrade every two to four years. Automatic upgrade to full version of Windows PC were not that often. So, it’s was very common either to buy a new PC or upgrade operating system on existing one.

Microsoft Windows is almost sending new security patches and version approximately every three to six months. Users can expect to have new feature update possibly a full OS version update. If you may skip important update, it won’t be long probably 4 months before being forced to update your operating system.

If you Microsoft windows is licensed and activated, update process is very simple. Windows update takes about an hour based on your PC hardware, you should be able to work on most of the application and setting while update is in process to successful migration.

In both cases, clean up the installation or upgrade windows, follow the checklist to make sure you’ve covered important basics that aren’t part of the windows upgrade/installation process.

  1. Which Antivirus is the best.
  2. What to do if laptop got viruses.
  3. Asus Laptop is not working.
  4. Windows stopped working after update.

Create a recovery drive

It’s a nice feeling to have a new outlook of Windows 10 after the successful upgrade. But sometimes if laptop does not start properly, you’ll be glad to have a recovery drive in hand.

Booting from Windows Recovery USB drive gives you access to Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) that you can use to resolve most common problems like boot, slow speed, viruses and etc. You need an empty USB stick. Its size should be at least 2GB for a bare recovery disk and at least 8 GB if you want to also include the fresh Windows installation files.

You will find a shortcut to the desktop application at startup drive recovery, under Windows control panel tools, or you can search. In both cases, you must provide the administrator credentials to run the tool.

Enable BitLocker Drive Encryption – Control Panel

Encryption of each disk driver containing personal data and information is a crucial step for user safety. Without encryption, anyone who steals, hack and

misuse that device. If PC is not encrypted, anyone can mount the drive in an operating system of choice and siphon data with ease. With

encryption, access to your data requires an personal encryption key that is actually indecipherable.

The full power BitLocker encryption requires a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and a professional version of Windows. On modern laptops

equipped with Windows 10 Home, you can enable encryption devices if you are connected with a Microsoft account. This option protects the

contents of the system drive but does not allow encryption of secondary readers.

Just be sure to save a copy (or two) of your BitLocker recovery key.

Configure Windows Update

The best part is Windows 10 Includes cumulative and automatic update that allow you to smoothly run the most recent and latest security fixes. Not so good part is that these updates can run automatically when you don’t expect them, with a small but 0 chance that an update may break an application or feature you reply on for daily work or productivity.

If you have licensed and upgraded Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional, it does allow you to postpone update up to 30 days or more. After successful completion of Windows 10 update, the first to do is go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows update and click on “Check for Updates”. Install all available updates, including drivers and etc.

On settings page, Click on Windows update, you can change active hours to specify your working hours, when you don’t want to be disturbed by updates. Click on “Advanced Option” and specify your period of monthly or weekly quality updates.

Windows 10 will send you notification asking for to install and restart windows or do it later. If you have chosen not to update automatically, you can select manual install the update, this can be done again going into “Windows Update and Security” settings.

Refine action center settings

One of Windows 10’s signature features is the Action Center, a panel that appears on the right side of the screen when you swipe right on a touch screen or click the notification icon at the far right of the taskbar.

For a laptop, it is recommended to customize the quick action buttons at the bottom of the Action Center panel. Hide all the buttons you don’t use and make sure the four buttons you use most often are available in the top row so you can access them when the set of buttons is reduced to a single row.

Next, review the list of apps that are allowed to interrupt you with notifications and silence the ones you never want to hear about. The settings allow you to control pop-up messages and sounds or to turn notifications off completely.
