Why is my MacBook air fan constantly running

You may wonder, “Why is my Macbook Air fan constantly running?” If so, you’ve come to the right place. However, firstly, you need to know that the fan is a significant component inside a laptop that controls the temperatures. And it should always be in optimal working condition.

If your Macbook Air fan remains turned off, it’ll be alarming because the notebook could become dead thanks to the overheating. Therefore, the fan constantly running isn’t a problem. Nonetheless, if the fan becomes too noisy, this article will explain the factors causing noise and what you can do to minimize it.

What are the causes of Macbook Air fan noise?

There are several reasons why your laptop’s fan would become noisy and run fast.

  • Use of intensive apps:

The number one reason that causes the fans to make more noise is the use of intensive apps like HD video editing, photoshop, illustration, VFX, programming, heavy gaming, etc.; these activities cause heating in the CPU and GPU; that’s where the fans come in and cool down the system to maintain an optimal temperature, stopping overheating.

  • Use of old laptop:

Another reason your notebook’s fans get really noisy and are always running is using an old Macbook Air. As many years go by, the components inside a laptop start wearing out and need more support. So, when the internal parts start heating up, the fans get into action and spin faster to cool the hardware.

  • Accumulation of dust:

Dust accumulation in the air vents can cause the fans to spin faster and louder. This is where you should worry a little because the dust blocks air vents, which means if the heat doesn’t get released properly, overheating will occur, causing harm to the laptop. That’s also why fans spin speedily to control the temperature, as the heat doesn’t pass out correctly.

  • Hot environment:

Working in a hot environment can also cause your device to become heated up quicker than usual. This makes the fans in your laptop work harder and run faster, making a lot of noise.

There could be many other reasons why your MacBook fans become noisy. However, you can try several effective solutions to fix this even when you don’t know the actual cause.

How to resolve the issue?

1- Shut down heavy apps:

It is necessary that you shut down all apps running in the background and software programs that heavily consume the power from the CPU and GPU. To start, close all your open programs. Then, open Activity Monitor to see how much CPU and GPU power each application uses. Identify the most resource-intensive applications and close them.

  • Left-click on the apps you want to close, tap on the “X,” and click on the “Quit” option.

This might allow the fans to take a rest from all that hard spinning and slow down, lowering the noise.

2- Disable-enable the SMC:

The System Management Controller (SMC) controls Mac functions like handling the battery management, cooling fans, power button, USB ports, etc. Due to a glitch sometimes, the internal parts under SMC’s supervision can act abnormally. So, to fix this, you can disable-enable the SMC.

Depending on your device model, there are different ways to reset the SMC.

For MacBook with T2 chips:

  • Shut down the device. Press Ctrl + Option + Shift keys together and hold for 8 seconds. This might allow your laptop to turn on.
  • After 8 seconds, press the power button while holding the three keys together. In case the laptop turns on, it will now turn off.
  • Repeat the previous step of holding all mentioned keys together and stop pressing after 8 seconds.
  • Turn your notebook on after waiting for a few seconds. Your SMC would be reset now, fixing the fan over-spin issue
  •

SMC reset for Macbooks without T2 chips:

  • Turn off the notebook and simultaneously press the shift + ctrl + Option keys.
  • As you hold these keys, press the power button.
  • Keep pressing all mentioned keys for 10 seconds and let go.
  • Your SMC would be done with the reset, so turn on the device and check if the problem is resolved.

3- Disable-enable the NVRAM:

The NVRAM of the Macbook is responsible for controlling volume, display settings, time and date settings, etc. However, it also works as a virtual memory that stores data about your laptop’s current state. That’s why glitches in the NVRAM can create problems in the components that could lead to fan operating issues. Hence, disabling-enabling it can help fix the issue.

  • To disable the NVRAM, shut down the laptop completely.
  • Then, Press Command, Option, P, and R keys together for 20 seconds while turning on the device.
  • When your device boots up, it’ll enable the NVRAM again.

4- Clean the air vents:

You could use compressed air to clean the air vents. However, it needs to be used carefully as instead of pushing the dust and debris out; it could shove it in. For the sake of safe and deep cleaning, it is recommended that you break into the MacBook and remove all the dust and gunk from the fans. But, if you aren’t up to the task, you might want to take help from a MacBook repair expert.

5- Disconnect external monitors:

Disconnecting external monitors from the MacBook help reduce the load on the GPU massively, allowing the fans to spin slower and quieter. So, this might also resolve the persisting issue.

6- Avoid using MacBook in warmer environments:

Sometimes in summers, the heat gets too hard to handle, and if you’re not using a cooler or air conditioner, the chances are that your laptop will heat up quickly. So, avoid using your notebook in warmer/hot environments. You could also get a cooling pad that will aid your MacBook’s fans in cooling the components without whirling too hard.

Final Thoughts:

Fans running always isn’t an issue, and you can surely control the noise by following our tips. Though if your laptop is old and makes a lot of noise, it could indicate a constant overheating issue with the laptop due to which fans whirl at a higher RPM. You could visit your local PC repair shop and get a regular MacBook maintenance checkup which might help identify other related issues at an early stage.
