Should You Buy a 2-in-1 Laptop?

Two things that are noticeable in all the 2-in-1 notebook designs include the thinness and their lightweight frame. While the convertible allows the keyboard to turn 360 degrees backward, the detachable laptop lets you remove the keyboard. Both designs have their pros and cons. 

With a removable keyboard, you may feel at ease while holding the tablet; however, with the non-removable model, it may get challenging to hold the tablet, thanks to your hands pressing random keys on the keyboard, not to mention the thickness and heavy weight would also tire your hands and arms.

In that sense, if you have to make a choice, you may go for the removable keyboard 2-in-1 laptop design, though it may not have a very robust keyboard like the convertible, it’s still a better choice comfort-wise. However, the consistent attaching and detaching of the keyboard could also create issues like loose hinges and the keyboard not connecting with the screen properly for it to work.

With that said, even though there are risks, people who enjoy reading or drawing on a tablet would be able to benefit from 2-in-1 notebooks.   

Advantages of 2-in-1 laptop:

1. The 2-in-1 laptops are advantageous for people who are accustomed to using tablets. Directly buying a 2-in-1 machine would help consumers save money instead of separately spending it on a laptop and a tablet.
2. The optimal touch screen allows you to operate the laptop in tablet mode comfortably. You can type a document or read a book like you could on your phone but get a much bigger screen for that matter.
3. A 2-in-1 notebook would help you to use the tablet mode in bed for video calls or entertainment like watching movies.
4. The stylus allows illustrators to draw comfortably. After all, tablets allow room for much better angles, creating a high level of flexibility and convenience.
5. The convertible offers the “Tent mode” where you can pitch the tablet like a tent using the 360 degrees keyboard as support. That’ll give you a convenient view while watching a movie.
6. The detachable keyboard allows you to carry the display only whenever you don’t need the “laptop mode.” It’s especially useful in public transport where you can quickly revise tests on the tablet and safely store it in your bag. So, it provides excellent portability overall.

Disadvantages of 2-in-1 laptop:

1. You can get a traditional laptop with higher specs for the same price because 2-in-1 laptops do not offer a powerful processor or a lot of storage. So, those looking for a powerful machine may skip on the 2-in-1 options and buy a standard laptop with the latest specs.
2. 2-in-1 laptops do not come with robust hardware. A less powerful processor and low storage are two examples; however, the fans are also not very effective in cooling down the heat yet consume a lot of battery power. Also, the battery lifespan isn’t long enough to support the device for several years.
3. Some users may find the keyboard keys to be a bit small in size; hence, finding typing a little challenging in 2-in-1 laptops.
4. The mechanism of detaching the keyboard in the 2-in-1 laptops could become faulty which would render the keyboard unusable.
5. The convertible could also develop faults like loose hinges with time as you’d pull the keyboard backward (though there are fewer chances that it’ll happen).
6. These laptops are costly. Also, the users could feel uncomfortable with the thickness of the display while holding them.

Final Thoughts:

The 2-in-1 laptops are good for users who are habitual of using both laptops and tablets. They might not be able to run heavy applications on 2-in-1 notebooks; however, it might not be a problem if their work routine isn’t rigorous enough to require them to run intensive software programs.

So, if a user is satisfied with reasonable specs and limited performance, then 2-in-1 laptops would be a fine choice, given that you’ll get the benefit of using the tablet mode.

On the contrary, a traditional laptop is the best choice for everyone who doesn’t need a plus like a tablet and needs a strong system to perform all sorts of major or minor computing tasks.
