How to Reduce Pdf file size on Mac

Folks usually reduce pdf size in Mac to create more space in storage. For smaller files, it might be insignificant to do so but for larger files, it isn’t a bad idea. However, there are many other things you can try first before compressing pdfs like deleting old Time Machine backups, deep cleaning the storage, clearing the Trash, saving large files on iCloud, and using an external USB drive to keep sizable data.

It is actually important to consider other options because compressing the file size may degrade the quality of the contents present in the pdf. Depending on how much size gets reduced, the images getting unclear is one thing but the written portion could get blurry as well. So, if you want to reduce the size of the pdf files, know that the quality will be compromised.  Now, let’s see how you can do it on your Mac.

1- Use the Preview app:

Preview is an in-built application available in the Mac that allows users to compress pdfs’ sizes.

  • Go to the Preview app and open the Pdf file you want to resize.
  • Select “File” and choose “Export.”
  • When you see a pop-up window, type a name for the file if you like and choose a location by clicking on “Where” to have it saved there.
  • Click on “Quartz Filter” and select “Reduce File Size” from the options.
  • Tap on “Save.”

After your file gets exported to the chosen folder, you can right-click on it and select “Get info” to see the new size after compression.

2- Use Online PDF compressors:

You can also use online pdf compressors that maintain the quality of the file as they reduce the size. Below-mentioned sites are the top three go-to choices for compressing the size of the pdf.

Final Thoughts:

Depending on what option suits you better, you can either use Preview or go to an online free website to compress your pdfs. While Preview may minimize the quality of the file, a good online site may save you from making this compromise.
