How to clean a laptop fan

Laptop fans should be serviced deeply every 6 months. However, you may use a dry lint-free cloth to wipe the side and bottom vents daily. That’ll keep the dust from building up inside the vents, preventing heat blockage.

Air circulation is a must for a machine like a laptop because all components release a certain amount of heat. Fans cool down the heat by pushing it outside the vents in the form of hot air. So, if that hot air gets trapped for some reason, like dust or debris buildup, you’ll be troubled with several more laptop issues. Let’s see how you can clean a laptop fan.

1- Use a Vacuum cleaner:

The vacuum cleaner is the best solution to service the fans. It sucks the dust and grime from the air vents ensuring cleanliness. For starters, you may want to shut down the laptop and unplug the cables. Then, bring the mini vacuum cleaner near the side vents; the vacuum will suck in all the gunk and muck. The same goes for the vents at the backside/bottom of the laptop.

If you don’t have a mini vacuum, you may use the one available at home; however, set the power at lower settings. And avoid using compressed air. Though you can utilize compressed air if that’s the only product easily available, ensure you don’t place the nozzle inside the vents or blow air facing the vents at a straight angle.

Doing so may push the dust and dirt further inside. The angle should be tilted, so the dust blows outside. Also, ensure you don’t make long presses to prevent condensation and use quick blows.

2- Disassemble your laptop:

You can disassemble the laptop for deep cleaning. But every laptop’s disassembly method is different. The basic steps would be shutting down the laptop and unplugging the adapter. Put the laptop upside down and unfasten the bolts to take off the backplate, exposing the internal components, including the fan.

You can use a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust and grime. And if that isn’t available, you may use damp brushes gently to scratch the dirt off the fans and wipe it with a soft cloth. You could also use a compressed air bottle to blow away all the debris.

Note: To find your model’s disassembly guide, you may visit the iFixit website or search the manufacturer’s website for support.

Final Thoughts:

Cleaning your laptop’s ports and air vents is a good PC maintenance practice. As you have read, the cleaning methods are very easy and convenient to carry out. Most utilities required to clean the laptop fans are already available at home. Or readily available at markets.

So, you must clean the air vents regularly and stop the dust from building up and entering the fans. Clean fans will handle the cooling process optimally, dissipating heat and positively affecting the overall laptop performance, which will save the laptop from many hardware and software issues.
